PERFECT! : Canon EOS Rebel T2i 18 MP CMOS APS-C Digital SLR Camera with 3.0-Inch LCD (Body Only)

First, I have an extensive background in both photography and video. I was looking for a smaller camera to carry around that could also shoot video. When I heard about this one I thought it would be perfect and it is good, very good BUT its does have its issues... I will try to keep this short and to the point.

Pros:

1. Superb image quality in both photos and video.
You can expect image quality comparable to a Canon Pro DSLR.
And I am not just saying that. I actually did compare it to our 1Ds MkII.
This camera can produces usable images up to ISO 3200. Noise is there but they
do a good job of controlling it. With this said, it would be noted that there
really isn't that much difference between a Canon 20D and the most expensive DSLR
for photos that will be displayed on the web or in regular size prints.
If you don't really need video then you can save yourself a lot of money and just
get a used 20D :) I actually still have my original 20D as a backup.

2. Amazingly, the 18-55 kit lens turned out to be remarkably good. How good?
Well, within the center area of the frame it would give the more expensive lens a run for their money :)
Where it begins to break down is in corner detail but this is to be expected.
The focusing is also too noisy to use for video, IF you are recording sound.

UPDATE: if you are looking to upgrade the lens, I can recommended the Canon 15-85 IS.

3. The built in mic is also very good. Even on regular video cameras this is almost a universal weakness.
If you are looking for a better mic I can recommend the Rode SVM Stereo Video Mic.
Works very well with this camera, unlike the Audio Technica 24CM. Its not cheap but good mics never are.
On all of these cameras hiss is a problem to varying degrees especially when recording in a quiet environment.
The quiter the source the more you will hear it. The only way to get remove it is to use an external audio
record like the Zoom H4N or do it in software with something like SoundSoap.

4. Light weight compared to the higher end Canon bodies.

5. Amazing low light video capability. With a fast lens f2.8 or lower even a Pro video camera can't touch it.
So if shooting in dark places is a big requirement then these cameras are the way to go.

Cons:

1. This is my biggest problem. I personally find the small body a lot more difficult to handle than the larger
Canon cameras we have. Maybe I am just use to the larger bodies but they are a lot more natural and easier
to work with. If you shoot pro or semi pro get the 7D just for this reason. The battery grip will help.
I have small hands so I hate to think how it would feel with someone that has large hands. I would highly recommend
you go somewhere and play with the T2i just to see how it feels in your hands.

UPDATE: The BG-E8 battery grip makes a big difference in this regard!

2. For my personal taste I find the T2i to over expose a bit. This could be related to the Peripheral Illumination
Correction, Highlight Priority, etc. I usually just under expose by 1/3 of a stop to compensate for this.

3. My 2nd big disappointment is the video. The video quality is superb this is not the issue. Where the problem lies
is in actually using the camera as a video camera. It has two big problems in this regard: the manual zoom and lack
of auto focus. It is practically impossible to hold the camera steady and do a smooth zoom in or out. Panning and zooming
at the same time is almost impossible. A regular video camera have electronic zoom controls that allows you to zoom
in and out very smoothly. The other problem is lack of auto focus. Sure you can refocus manually but again very difficult
to hold the camera steady and focus. Using the camera auto focus in video mode is possible but its really slow and
the mic will pick up the noise from the lens as it hunts for the focus. For me, this means, the camera is more useful
for recording short video clips not a full video shoot e.g. shooting a whole wedding. I don't feel it can replace a regular
video camera as yet. For example, if you are thinking of using this camera to shoot your kids running around, it can do it,
but there will be a lot of out of focus parts because it cannot track a subject like a regular video camera can and you
won't be able to adjust the focus quickly enough either.

UPDATE: the video can work for the most part, IF you shoot with the intent of editing the final video. A SLR will require
a bit more post production work than a regular video camera but the video quality will be superior. It works more like
a professional film camera they use in movies than the video cameras we know. But with that said, this camera still has
some real issues. Neither the shutter or aperture is continuous. You can only change them in 1/3 intervals...enough to
cause a jump in exposure in many instances. On top of that you cannot change anything without recording the clicking
noise the dial makes when you change the values. If you are using the mic in or on the camera this is a problem.
With this camera you have to setup a scene, setup your exposure, set your focus, and shoot the scene. Don't plan on
making any changes while you are shooting. So while the manual control is nice its not usable while shooting a scene.


If you can live with the Cons. Its a great camera that offers image quality comparable to any high end Canon model.

Solid Prosumer Dslr/Video Camera : Canon EOS 60D 18 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera with 3.0-Inch LCD and 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS UD Standard Zoom Lens

The three dSlrs in the Canon consumer line-up (60D, 7D, T2i) all share a number of specifications and features, a similar exposure metering system, as well as an image sensor that is very similar, and all with 18 megapixels. Due to this, the image capability and Iso execution of these three cameras will be nearly identical, and all are capable of taking high capability images. So why pick the 60D over the T2i (550D) or the 7D?

-Exterior buttons and controls: Greater ease and operate of changing camera settings as you work vs. The T2i. The 60D has nearly every operate one needs on the surface of the camera and it has the rear dial and top Lcd display screen that are not on the T2i. Any other controls can be undoubtedly accessed with the Q button and menu or in the other menus on the rear Lcd monitor. These settings allow you to customize the operation, function, and controls of the 60D to work how you want them to, including things like exposure increments, peripheral illuminations revision for lenses (fixes dark corners) and customizing which button does what.

-Auto focus systems: The 60D shares a similar autofocus ideas to the T2i and the old 50D, with 9 focus points and three auto focusing modes. However the 9 Af points of the 60D are more sensitive than those of the T2i: all are cross-type in the 60D, only the town is cross-type in the T2i. The 60D autofocus ideas is much less complicated than the sophisticated Af ideas of the 7D with its 19 Af point ideas and its further Zone, Spot, and Expansion focus modes - not to mention the custom settings of the 7D which will allow one to customize how the Af ideas works. However, if you are not an avid sports photographer, a wildlife shooter, or someone who understands, needs, and will use the explicate features of the 7D Af system, then this shouldn't dissuade you from the 60D.

-Exposure Metering: The three cameras all share the most recent 63-zone exposure metering ideas and 4 metering modes. That means they will all decree the exposure virtually identically and enable you to take properly exposed photos in most every situation, including difficult back-lit scenes. The size of the areas metered for Partial and Spot metering vary slightly in the middle of the cameras, but that isn't anything critical.

-Iso: Since the 60D shares a very similar sensor with the other two cameras, its Iso sensitivity and execution at high Iso settings is virtually the same. But don't take my word for it, don't be swayed by pixel peepers on forums, instead check out the camera sensor tests at dxomark to verify this.

-Continuous Shooting Speed: While the 60D can't shoot a blazing 8 frames per second like the 7D, it can shoot a respectable 5.3 fps which is generally a more beneficial rate, and is a higher rate than the T2i rate of 3 fps.

-Size and Weight: The 60D is larger and heavier than the T2i but smaller and lighter than the 7D. It is a very nice size, weight, feel, and form that should be comfortable for most users.

-Construction: The 60 has relatively strong building of aluminum and polycarbonate. It is great built than the T2i but not as strong as the 7D's magnesium alloy frame. The 60D also has some number of weather sealing - more than the T2i, less than the 7D. But for most users, including even those using the camera daily or in trip situations, the building of the 60D is far more than good enough, strong enough, durable enough, and weather unyielding enough.

-Articulating Rear Lcd Screen: The 60D is the only current Canon dSlr with this handy feature. This may prove beneficial for videographers, as well as for setting up compositions while the camera is on a tripod, for macro use, or for using it from unusually low or high vantage points. There is also an electronic level, illustrated in the viewfinder, rear Lcd, or top Lcd.

-Viewfinder: The 60D has a large, challenging viewfinder with 96% coverage of the actual resulting image, a tiny bit great than the T2i but not quite as nice as the nearly 100% view of the 7D.

-Wireless Flash: Like the 7D, the 60D incorporates wireless flash triggering. It allows you to trigger multiple off camera flashes at distinct production levels. The T2i does not have this feature.

-Battery: The 60D has a larger batter vs. The T2i, thus allowing longer periods of shooting before having to recharge. The 60D uses the Lp-E6 battery like the 7D, which is a nice feature as this battery can often last through a full day of shooting.

-Processor: The 60D shares the same Digic 4 processor as the T2i. The 7D has dual Digic 4 processors. However, for most normal or even demanding photography needs, the singular processor is more than sufficient.

-Memory Card: The 60D uses the Sd memory card like the T2i, not the Cf card of the 7D. This doesn't affect anything except perhaps your collection of Cf cards.

-Additional processing features: The 60D has added features such as the creative filters (toy camera, small tilt-shift effect) and internal file processing capabilities (Raw image processing, image resizing) that the other two cameras do not have. This is not considerable as these operations can typically be more undoubtedly done in batches on a computer.

-Lack of Af Microadjustment: Many are disappointed that the 60D does not include the capability to micro-adjust the focus so that each lens is completely accurate. However, if you have a focus issue, send your camera and/ or lenses to Canon while under warranty and ask them to calibrate them. The 7D has this feature, the T2i does not.

-Locking Mode Dial: This is a new feature for a Canon dSlr that keeps the Mode dial from accidentally rotating. A nice touch only on the 60D.

-Full Hd Video: And of procedure the 60D has full Hd video, just like the other two cameras.

-A Note to Strobists: The 60D does not have a Pc sync flash socket to plug in Pc sync cords. The 7D has this, the T2i does not.

-Ease of operation: While beginners may find all the buttons, controls, and menus of any dSlr difficult and confusing at first, the controls and menus of the 60D are all quite intelligently designed and straightforward for the advanced user.
